Geoffrey Aitken at Spoke ‘N Slurred

Don’t be too emo about a Danless spoke ‘n slurred,(he’s off gallivanting in Japan)we still have all of the usual stuff and nonsense.

We are very pleased to have a champion of brevity as our feature poet, Geoffrey Aitken.

Geoffrey Aitken is a minimalist poet driven by four parts prescription medication as he determines what his lived experience entitles him to in streetwear, while with others in open mic venues, no longer believing the stars are actually in play. His full Bio pays respects and gratitude to the Kaurna land custodians of the unceded Adelaide Plains. He could be a Himbo if he were allowed to stray.

‘this is no ordinary rapture…’ – Kerryn Tredrea Book Launch

Friday 17th March 2023
7:30 – 10:30 pm

Broadcast Bar
66A Grote Street, Adelaide

Join us for THE essential Paroxysm gig of the year. The launch of the second book of Kerryn Tredrea poetry, ‘this is no ordinary rapture…’

Launched by Heather Taylor-Johnson + spoken word from Nadia Patterson + tunes from an acoustic El Bottle O Paradiso.

FREE entry.

Books $15 on the night.

Kerryn Tredrea writes about lust, madness, loneliness and connection as if they were the same thing. Tethered to her distinctive voice is a poetry donning worn-out doc martins keeping step with junkies, the poet insisting i find my window of opportunity / and look through to the red light district. Her style is consistent, and as she recognises risk-taking and mistake-making as a part of life, she comes out a sage: everything has / the smell of coffee / about it / and the feeling of / a biting snake, / sharp / and to the point.” – Heather Taylor-Johnson

Nicki Bullock at Spoke N Slurred

Sunday 30th October 2022
from 5:30pm

Broadcast Bar
66A Grote Street, Adelaide

Nicki Bullock is also known as Dirty Nickers, possibly for her dirty mind or dirty mouth or variety of reasons we won’t go in to here, or mayhap because she is not afraid of dirty laundry, saying the things others prefer to remain unspoken, airing the secrets you are not supposed to talk of, abhorring censorship and this easily offended culture – for giving respect is different from taking offense; something that seems grossly misinterpreted these days. Her anger at the fuckedupedness of the world comes from a place of love for all the awesomeness; ‘in loving anger’ being the the theme of her ever-unfinished album she is working on and her current spoken word performance she will deliver. Unable to stay in any box, she has been given a vast array of labels: a happy psychedelic hillbilly; a foul-mouthed, crass punk; bike-riding brat; an idealistic hippy and acid-casualty artist; a rainbow explosion of chaos – ever evolving, defying description, spitting out words on stage is a rarer thing for Dirty Nickers these days, this Spoken Slurred will be her first spoken word performance of the year and she’s got lots of love and anger for you.

Jay Simunov at Spoke N Slurred

Sunday 28th August 2022
from 5:30pm

Broadcast Bar
66A Grote Street, Adelaide

The time is coming to get some more Sunday slurred action with a guest spot worthy of our ways…

Jay Simunov is an Adelaide “poet” who writes about bipolar disorder, longing to be kissed by attractive strangers, and revolutionary guerilla warfare. His work is inspired by the inflammatory political poetics of writers like Amiri Baraka and Sean Bonney as well as the work of social undesirables excluded from the respectable artworld such as the schizophrenic photographer David Nebreda, various repulsive internet cretins, and people who scrawl profanity in public bathrooms. He has never won an award for his poetry.
